Era of Chaos

Some say that the Primordials restarted their war with the Gods of the Astral Sea. Others, that a magical catastrophe in a far-off land altered the very fabric of the world. Others still considered it punishment, a recompense for the failings of mortals in the eyes of the divine. Whatever the cause may have been, the Era of Chaos fundamentally altered the very nature of the world, geographically and politically. Portions of the Elemental Chaos began to overlap and intersect with the material world, forever altering the landscape and the flow of magic throughout. The changes brought about by rampant elemental forces, both in the land and the people, and the subsequent rise of the Elementalist as an arcane force, shattered the old power structures and helped to usher in the reign of the Eidasian Empire.

Key among the changes wrought by the Era of Chaos was the introduction of entirely new races, sometimes even cultures, to the world at large. Rumors and theories abound as to possible sightings prior, but known races to be introduced during this era include Goliaths, various manifestations of Genasi, Changelings, and both the people and culture of the Githzerai. In addition to the new races walking the world, many members of the older races were more subtly altered by the Elemental Chaos, gaining new-found powers to match their new reality.
